PSD Exporter: Automate PSD Generation from Your App

PSD Exporter Tips: Optimize File Size and Compatibility

1. Choose the right export settings

  • Compression: Use ZIP compression for lossless results; LZW if ZIP unavailable. Avoid RLE for large files.
  • Color mode: Export in the lowest adequate color mode (RGB for screen, CMYK only for print).
  • Bit depth: Prefer 8-bit per channel unless you need HDR/16-bit edits.

2. Flatten or keep layers strategically

  • Merge nonessential layers (adjustment layers, hidden layers) to reduce size.
  • Keep layer groups instead of many individual layers when possible—groups compress better.
  • Smart Objects: Rasterize large smart objects you won’t edit further.

3. Optimize assets before export

  • Resize large images to final required dimensions; avoid exporting extremely high-resolution bitmaps if not needed.
  • Use vector shapes for logos/icons instead of raster layers to keep file size down.
  • Export embedded images externally and link them when reimporting is supported.

4. Reduce embedded metadata and extras

  • Strip unnecessary metadata (camera info, GPS) unless required.
  • Remove unused channels, paths, and alpha masks that aren’t needed.
  • Limit history states and hidden layer comps if the exporter includes them.

5. Manage smart filters and effects

  • Rasterize heavy filter effects that won’t be edited later.
  • Replace complex layer styles with simpler equivalents where fidelity allows.

6. Preserve compatibility settings

  • Target the correct PSD version: Use older PSD compatibility if the recipient uses older Adobe versions.
  • Maximize compatibility option: Enable only if the recipient needs flattened previews; it increases file size.
  • Use standard fonts or outline text to avoid font substitution issues—outline when you must guarantee appearance.

7. Test across platforms

  • Open exported PSDs in different editors (Photoshop, Affinity, Photopea) to confirm layer fidelity.
  • Check color profile handling across apps to ensure consistent color appearance.

8. Automate for consistency

  • Create export presets with optimized settings for different targets (web, print, mobile).
  • Batch-export after applying the same optimizations to multiple files.

Quick checklist before export

  • Color mode = correct target
  • Bit depth = 8-bit unless needed
  • Unnecessary layers/metadata removed
  • Large rasters resized or rasterized
  • Fonts outlined or embedded
  • Compatibility version confirmed
